## Why Teams Choose Logmanager Over a Self-Built ELK Stack

First, credit where it’s due: ELK is powerful. If you have a platform engineer dedicated to it, operate at unusual scale, or need search capabilities that go well beyond log management, building around Elasticsearch can make perfect sense. But many IT and security teams do not need another platform to engineer. They need their logs collected, normalized, searchable, retained, and ready when something goes wrong.

That is where Logmanager fits. You get 140+ built-in parsers, predefined dashboards and alerts, and tamper-proof long-term retention without having to run the cluster behind it. No Logstash pipelines to maintain. No dashboards to build from scratch. No upgrade cycle to plan around. You get a ready-to-use logging platform that does not need constant babysitting.

Budget for log management, not for everything required to keep a search cluster alive. Enjoy a full-featured log management solution with simple, transparent pricing based solely on the volume of data you store each month.

        ## What ELK Stack Actually Costs to Run

The ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) is free and open-source under the self-managed Basic license, but running it in production is not free. You still need to pay for compute, memory, storage, networking, backups, redundancy, and the infrastructure required to handle your log volume and retention needs.

The biggest cost is often operational. Someone has to design and maintain ingest pipelines, monitor cluster health, manage nodes and shards, plan capacity, troubleshoot performance, handle upgrades, test backups, and keep the system available. So the real cost of ELK is the infrastructure plus the engineering time required to keep it running reliably. If you want Elastic’s commercial features, such as SSO, advanced RBAC, or more advanced machine learning capabilities, or vendor support on top of that, you’ll need a separate paid subscription with no publicly listed price.

## Logmanager as an ELK Stack Alternative FAQ

![centralized log management feature new](https://logmanager.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Centralized-log-manag-feature-use-case-logmanager-new2-1-1024x1024.png)

- What are the key differences between Logmanager and the ELK Stack? The short answer: what is already built for you versus what your team has to build and maintain.

    - **Setup & configuration:** Logmanager comes with 140+ parsers, predefined dashboards, reports, and alerts, all configurable through a no-code visual editor (Blockly). With ELK, your team typically builds and maintains the ingest pipelines, parsing rules, and Kibana dashboards needed for your environment.
    - **Ongoing maintenance:** Logmanager is maintained and updated by the vendor. With a self-managed ELK Stack, your team is responsible for cluster health, nodes and shards, upgrades, and keeping custom pipelines and configurations working over time.
    - **Support:** Support is included with every paid Logmanager tier. With self-managed ELK, support beyond community resources requires a separate paid Elastic subscription.
    - **Pricing model:** Logmanager pricing is based primarily on how much data you store. The cost of a self-managed ELK Stack is spread across infrastructure, storage, engineering time, and, if needed, paid Elastic features and support.
    - **Time to deploy:** Logmanager can be deployed in about 30 minutes, either self-hosted or in Logmanager’s managed cloud. With ELK, deployment time depends on the architecture, integrations, and the resources available to build and configure it.
- Can I move my existing ELK Stack setup over, and how long does it take? Yes. The mechanical part is quick: repoint your log sources (syslog, Beats/Filebeat outputs, whatever’s currently feeding Logstash) to Logmanager, and its 140+ built-in parsers cover most common sources automatically, so ingestion is usually the fast part.

What takes longer is rebuilding what you’d already customized in Kibana: saved searches, dashboards, and alert rules don’t migrate automatically and need to be recreated in Logmanager, though the no-code Blockly editor means that’s configuration, not code. As a rough shape: expect about 30 minutes for the VM deployment itself, a couple of hours for onboarding and repointing sources, and roughly another hour to rebuild a typical dashboard set — more if your ELK setup has a lot of custom Logstash pipeline logic or Watcher/alerting rules to translate.
- How much does ELK Stack cost compared to Logmanager? The pricing models are structured very differently, so the real comparison is not between two license fees. It is between everything you actually pay to run each platform.

    - **Logmanager:** Pricing is based primarily on the amount of log data you store, with published pricing on logmanager.com/pricing. Support is included with paid Scale and Max plans.
    - **ELK Stack, self-managed:** The core stack can be used for free. In production, the cost comes from your own compute, storage, networking, backups, and the engineering time required to build and maintain ingest pipelines, dashboards, and cluster operations. If you need paid Elastic features such as SSO, field- and document-level security, machine learning capabilities, or vendor support, you also need a commercial subscription. Self-managed subscription pricing is available on request. (September, 2026)
    - **Elastic Observability Serverless:** Logs Essentials starts at $0.07 per GB ingested and $0.017 per GB retained per month. Limited support is included at the Standard level; higher support tiers add 5%, 10%, or 15% of consumption for Gold, Platinum, or Enterprise support respectively. (September, 2026)
- What alternatives are there to the ELK Stack? Broadly, the choice comes down to two paths: operate an open-source logging platform yourself or use a commercial platform where more of the operational burden is handled by the vendor.

**Open-source options** such as Graylog, Wazuh, or the ELK Stack itself can be used without software license fees and give you a high degree of control over deployment and customization. The tradeoff is operational ownership: your team is responsible for the infrastructure, upgrades, integrations, performance, and ongoing maintenance. Commercial support may require a separate subscription, and running these platforms well usually requires meaningful platform-engineering time.

**Commercial and managed platforms** such as Logmanager, Datadog, Logz.io, Sumo Logic, or SolarWinds shift more of that responsibility to the vendor. They typically provide more functionality out of the box, managed upgrades, product support, and a faster path to production. In return, you pay a recurring subscription and may have less low-level control than with a self-built open-source stack. Deployment models also vary, with some vendors focused primarily or entirely on cloud delivery.
- How does Logmanager ensure the security of my business data? Logmanager is a hardened appliance that ensures the confidentiality and integrity of data. It prevents any manipulation, deletion, or alteration of logs (SSH is not running on the appliance, so access to the operating system is restricted). Additionally, Logmanager secures data during transfer, uses secure storage mechanisms, and provides role-based access control to enhance strict security measures.
- Is there a free Logmanager tier? Yes. Basically, you can tap into the [Logmanager free tier](https://logmanager.com/free-log-management-software/) and enjoy a full-featured log management solution. The only limit is **100 GB** of supported log storage, which gives you plenty of space to start collecting and analyzing data right away.

Once this limit is reached, the system automatically manages your data by overwriting the oldest entries with new ones. This ensures that you always have access to the most recent log data without having to manually clear space or adjust settings.
